New York Fashion Week’s style-packed days are over. To end, a wonderful designer. In just two years, Rosie Assoulin has made her mark in the fashion industry. This thirty-year-old mum from Brooklyn is the designer everybody’s talking about. Her pragmatic and fresh collections have conquered the closets of the likes of Alexa ChungJulianne MooreLily Aldridge or Solange, among others. This is her unique story.

Statement-making creations and a vibrant colour palette have become her trademark. Rosie Assoulin was first inspired by her family as they reinvented their own pieces of clothing at home. Her future mother-in-law was a jewellery designer and one of her first mentors, and Rosie showed a lot of promise from a young age. In an interview with Leah Chernikoff for Fashionista, Rosie reveals that she was made for this industry, “I couldn’t do something else and feel fulfilled.”

Lucky for her, her life was rich with hands on experience, which influenced her style. In spite of Rosie’s short academic record (she only spent four months at fashion school), the people surrounding her and those she worked with allowed her to build her own designer persona and create very unique fashion pieces. She recognises the influence her upbringing has had on her designs: “It’s New York City. It’s all a fashion show.” Image: Alexa Chung wearing Rosie Assoulin. Image: Alexa Chung

She also interned for Dominican-American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and through this experience gained an insight into the production behind the scenes and the use of luxury fabrics. She went on to work in Paris for Lanvin and other renowned design houses before building up the courage to create her own label. Image: Rosie Assoulin. Photo: Jesse Dittmar.

Since then, Rosie Assoulin has made pragmatic clothing for everyday women. Her unique pieces are made for women to identify with and feel themselves. For example, in her collection she has skirts with detachable tiers to alternate length, going from daywear to evening with a few unzips. Another main trend in her collection are large pants and practical pieces with pockets for your lipstick or keys. In her latest collection, she is also inspired by flowers, which give it a very feminine touch. More original, though, are her inspirations in ceramics by Betty Woodward. Her unique and very chic shoulder bags have extremely imaginative shapes. The fashion designer also uses the faces of aging women as her muse. She finds the face’s natural aging process a source of beauty and realism. Photo vía Vogue.
